ACCA vs CA: Which Qualification Should You Choose in 2026?
An objective, detailed comparison between ACCA (UK) and Indian Chartered Accountancy (ICAI) examining pass rates, duration, global mobility, statutory audit rights, and salary packages.

The choice between the Indian Chartered Accountancy (CA) credential awarded by ICAI and the global ACCA qualification awarded by the UK-based body is the single most common dilemma faced by Indian commerce students. Both programs produce top-tier financial professionals, but they serve distinct career goals and geographic aspirations.

1. Recognition and Jurisdiction

**Chartered Accountancy (CA - ICAI):** The premier national qualification in India. Only a qualified member of the ICAI possesses the statutory signing authority to conduct independent financial audits of Indian registered companies under the Companies Act and sign income tax audit reports.

**ACCA (Global Chartered Accountant):** An international qualification with members recognized in over 180 countries. While ACCA members in India cannot sign statutory audit reports for Indian domestic companies, they are heavily recruited by Big 4 firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG), multinational corporations, and Global Capability Centers (GCCs) for IFRS financial reporting, FP&A, global audits, and cross-border consulting.

2. Exam Flexibility and Pass Rates

**CA Examination:** Conducted in group formats (3 papers per group). Candidates must clear the entire group simultaneously with a minimum 40% in each subject and 50% aggregate. The historical pass percentage for CA Final ranges between 10% to 20%.

**ACCA Examination:** Paper-by-paper modular system. You can prepare and sit for a single paper at a time. The passing mark is 50%, and global pass rates average between 40% to 80% depending on the level.

3. Course Duration

**CA:** Typically takes 4.5 to 6 years, including 2 years of mandatory full-time articleship.

**ACCA:** Typically completed within 2 to 3 years, with greater flexibility to balance work and study.

4. Which is Right for You?

Choose **CA** if your primary career ambition is independent statutory audit practice in India, domestic tax litigation, or serving as statutory auditor for domestic enterprises.

Choose **ACCA** if your dream is to work in Big 4 multinational teams, transition to Dubai, UK, Singapore, or Canada, or work in corporate financial leadership with high flexibility and international mobility.
